Actually, the fire in 1812 didn't burn down the White House, but did scorch it. Dolly Madison saved a painting by Adams. Many White House items have been lost or stolen through the years by various means. When Lincoln died crowds broke into the house and took things out while Mary Todd was locked in an upstairs room. Today, the Park service handles all the items on the bottom floor the house. They have items in storage and will move things around or replace things when needed.

It was after the War of 1812. In this time people didn't paint houses because paint was so expensive, but after the White House was burned by the British to cover the burn marks it was painted white. It was a natural thing for people to refer to it as the White House from that point since it was the only painted house in the area. The reference stuck so now we know it as the White House .
