The role of a Stage Manager various greatly depending on the size of the production and the company. In general, they will lead the stage management team and be overall responsible for making the production happen. They will work with the other departments and ensure that everything runs smoothly.

In the United Stated, the Stage Manager will sit in rehearsals and create the prompt copy (often called a book). This will include all of the blocking and cues for the show. The Stage Manager when then call the show which means they will tell all technical departments when to go.

In the United Kingdom, this role is often left to the Deputy Stage Manager while the Stage Manager takes on more of the planning and health and safety.

There are also Assistant Stage Managers. In the UK they will generally be required to prop the show and will run cues during performances. In the US there is often a props department, but the ASM might still be required to run cues during the performance and get involved with props.

The stage management department work very closely with the creative team and the cast. They are usually responsible for organising rehearsals, calling actors, creating daily rehearsal notes and creating show reports. Once the show has opened, the stage manager is in charge of the day to day running of the production.
