Well India's population grows very rapidly because it is not the most developed country so they do not have much of family planning. Also most the people their are farmers and they need kids (mainly boys) to help them farm. In addition India does not have any maximum child policy like China so they keep on having as many children as they want.

Discriminating between a boy-child and girl-child is one of the reasons of large population in India.

Every Indian man or woman wants a 'vaarish' (a heir) to the family. In India it is obviously the boy who inherits his father's wealth, the family title and other family heirlooms. Girls are often married away given little or abundant dowry depending upon the father's wealth.

The responsibility of taking care of the parents falls on the son. So parents in India yearn for a son.

The parents rejoice once a boy child is born into the family. But when a girl-child is born they consider her as a burden and mourn deeply. So they think they need to go for a son. This happens so often that at one stage a family might have even six to seven daughters!. So, the want of one son produces many daughters.

Child labor is another cause for increase in population. Poor parents produce many offspring so that their children can work and bring money to the family. As a result many young children across India are forced to work hard in match box factories and many other establishments.

Alcoholism and illiteracy also play a major role in the rise in population. peasants who are illiterate and drunk are not aware of Birth Control methods and precautions against pregnancy.

Last but not the least there is an age old belief that children are gifts from god and aborting them is against god's will.
