the french caught the plague in 2009
pneumonic plague
There really is not much of a similarity between the two besides the fact that the both caused a worldwide pandemic. The black death was caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis, while the Spanish influenza was caused by a highly virulent strain of influenza virus (H1N1). The most common form of the black death (bubonic plague) is believed to have spread by bites from infected fleas carrying the bacteria. Pneumonic plague, which was less common by more virulent was spread through the respiratory tract. Similarly influenza is also an airborne disease, however, other than that they are completely different pathogens that occured in completely different time periods.

The main conflict in this book is that Stephen Quinn and his Dad are one among the survivors of the eleventh plague and struggle to find food and other basic needs. They trade stuff for food. They hide themselves from slavers, who are rich people and capture poor people and make them work for them. Another difficult situation that they face is natural disasters. They have to protect themselves from heavy rain, snow, tornadoes, etc. But they don't have any shelter to protect themselves. The main thing that they have to protect themselves is from the Sickness (Eleventh plague), which wiped out two-thirds of America's population. They don't have any good clothing to protect themselves from the cold weather. Stephen and his Dad are trying to move to the west of the United States because they hope to find good shelter, food, etc. But the problem is they cannot. They don't have good transportation to move. So they have to walk a long distance. But they still take risks to go to the West.
