XMB stands for Cross Media Bar, it is the horizontal menu bar on a Sony PSP.
There is an option on the xmb menu, under the playstation network section, that says sign up :)
After you download a demo from the Playstation store it must be installed by going to the games section of your XMB and clicking on the game title. After it has been installed you only need to click it to play
