Believe it or not South Africa is a fairly first or second world country, as such most people live in normal houses as you would find through the developed world.
Having said that, this is most certainly not the rule for everyone. There are shanty towns (much as you would find in Rio or India) side by side with well developed housing estates and freehold properties.
Some rural communities do still stay in mud houses, but this traditional way of life is offset by the fact that many of them have running water, electricity, television and of course mobile phone reception.
