We don't currently have equipment ready to deal with this problem, but the idea would be to divert the asteroid by either speeding it up or slowing it down. Blowing it up like in the movie "Armageddon" would be an extremely bad idea, because it would just create a bunch of small objects which would still collide with earth, thus distributing the impact rather than avoiding it.
