In the 1800s, China faced significant internal and external challenges that contributed to its weakness. Internally, the Qing Dynasty struggled with corruption, social unrest, and population pressures, leading to uprisings such as the Taiping Rebellion. Externally, Western powers exploited China's vulnerabilities through unequal treaties following military defeats, such as the Opium Wars, further eroding its sovereignty and economic stability. These factors combined to undermine China's strength and influence during this period.
China was an isolationist country that did not want to trade with other nations, especially not Europeans. However, Europeans basically took over China and cut it into little pieces among the French, British, Germans, Italians, and Portuguese. They then forced China to trade with them. The unequal treaties were considered unfair to China because they were forced upon the country by Western powers, exploiting China's weakened state to extract concessions that favored the foreign powers. These treaties often granted extraterritorial rights to foreigners, imposed unequal tariffs, and allowed foreign control of Chinese territory, undermining China's sovereignty and national pride.
