There have been many significant developments in astronomy. If you are asking about the two most important, then I suggest you consider the development of the telescope by unknown opticians in Belgium, and the wide adoption of the Copernican theory of a Sun-centered solar system.

There are a number of other developments that are probably almost as important; perhaps some of the other folks here can suggest some.

Babylonian astronomy was important in terms of the functioning of the state and for the king. Celestial phenomena were tracked and recorded, as well as events that happened on Earth that corresponded with those phenomena. In doing so, Babylonian astronomers created a respotiory of known omens, so that the king could take action against whatever the sky predicted would happen. They were able to create an accurate astronomical table so they could know what was happening in the sky even if it was obscured and were also able to notice when something happened in the sky that was out of the ordinary or against know patterns.

We'll make you a deal: instead of just typing your homework questions in verbatim, spend half a minute thinking about what kind of information we'd need to have to answer it (hint: it would help if we knew what "these cultures" were), and then we'll consider actually answering you.

What cultures made major contributions to astronomy?

Most cultures have significant aspects of astronomy present in them, as it was a primary method for telling time and planning crops around the world. Chinese history has some of the earliest recorded accounts of comets and even a supernova. Greek astronomers, through their ties with the rise of the Roman Empire, have had many of their constellations adopted by the western powers. They also have the earliest estimate for the diameter of the earth (which they determined to be round long before that!) at ~300 BC. Mayans and Egyptians have extensive calendar systems, though their impact on modern astronomy (again, in the western hemisphere) is minimal.
