The Creme Brulee came from France. The Creme Brulee has a hard sugar crust on top and a vanilla custard in the middle. The creme brulee consists of egg, 2 types of sugar, vanilla beans and egg yolks. It is an easy recipe and tastes great :)

The exact origins are uncertain.

The earliest known reference of crème brûlée as we know it today appears in France Massialots's 1691 cookbook, and the French name was used in the English translation of this book, but the 1731 edition of Massialot's Cuisinier roial et bourgeoischanged the name of the same recipe from "crème brûlée" to "crème anglaise". In the early eighteenth century, the dessert was called "burnt cream" in English.

In Britain, a version of crème brûlée (known locally as 'Trinity Cream' or 'Cambridge burnt cream') was introduced at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1879 with the college arms "impressed on top of the cream with a branding iron"

Can you use tin foil cups instead of ramekins to make creme brulee?

As long as they are heat resistant enough to go in the oven to melt the sugar, sure. Creme brulee is very rich, so make it a small tea cup, or don't fill it with to much custard. This is one of those times when to much of a good thing can be a bad thing!
