The grasslands of Africa lie mostly between tropical rainforest and desert, as well as a section in South Africa. Covering 2.5 million square kilometers, the African savanna is more than 3 times the size of NSW and extends through 27 different countries.

Only 8.5% of the entire Savanna biome is protected and there needs to be more protected areas if the grasslands are to survive, and biodiversity be maintained.

The savanna has a tropical climate with a dry season in the winter. Savannas occur when the yearly rainfall is concentrated into a few months, there are poor soil conditions, and as the result of land clearing.
