New Zealand does not have provinces. Taupo is a city in New Zealand and has its own council (Taupo district council) but policing and other community services are run by a nationwide government

These are of historic interest now, though the idea is still strongly felt.

In the North island (from memory) Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Wellington.

In the South island, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury (which includes the Chatham Islands), Westland, Otago and Southland (which includes Stewart Island).

Many of these old Provincial Government boundaries of 125 years ago, still have relevance in the modern Regional Councils. It should be noted however that the number of provinces has varied from time to time as have their boundaries.
