I assume you are talking about the province of Quebec, but they tried to separate from Canada, not North America (which is a continent). It deals with their desire to have greater control over their own government.

Quebec has demanded separation from Canada. The incredibly vast majority of people who live in Quebec speak french, and they feel if they separated from Canada more of their specific needs (such as their rights to speak french and follow french traditions) would be met

The province in Canada that wants independence the most is Québec. Québec wants independence because historically, they were once owned by the French, until the English took them over.

They also want to protect there culture. 80% of Québec speaks French, and Québec are afraid, with being surrounded by a English speaking Canada, they will loose there French language and there culture. Just like Maine did.

Canada has many reasons why they don't want Québec to be independent. One reason is Québec has 25% of Canada's population.

Some people in Quebec wanted (and some still want) to separate from the rest of Canada. The party elected to govern the Province is and frequently has been in favour of separating but repeated referenda have proved that the majority of people in the province do not have and have never had any interest whatsoever in doing so.
