King David, in essence, represented the ideal Christian. He was even called "a man after God's own heart". If you look at his life and see the mistakes he made, he was always there to be corrected and to own up to his mistakes. He showed that it doesn't take a perfect person to be a child of God, but rather an imperfect person because it gives God something to shape and mold. He was the symbol of letting God change a person, even through their screw-ups.
