The Wicked Witch of the East lived in the beautiful, enchanted, magical land of Oz. A day that she was out broom riding, there was a cyclone in Kansas. The twister carried Dorothy Gale's house all the way to Oz. The house just happened to land, and settle, on top of the Witch. She must have been killed instantly.
The Wicked Witch of the East's sister, the Wicked Witch of the West, died when Dorothy threw a fatal bucket of water. In response, the Witch melted to the color of brown sugar, and then into nothingness.
This is the information as provided by the original 1900 book edition, and the beloved 1939 film version, of 'The Wizard of Oz'. But appearances may be deceiving, according to the stage version of 'Wicked', which is based on the tell all Oz series book, 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West'.
The only visible part of her were her feet, with the ruby slippers on them, after Dorothy's house had fallen on her. Then, the ruby slippers are taken off her feet, and they curl up under the house.
The source of Dorothy's worst nightmare and most steadfast hope is the role played by Glinda the Good Witch in "The Wizard of Oz."Specifically, Glinda gives the slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East to Dorothy Gale in the beloved 1939 film version, but not the original 1900 book edition, of "The Wizard of Oz." This puts Dorothy in direct conflict with the Wicked Witch of the West, who knows about the shoes' powerful magic. Dorothy ultimately succeeds in defeating the witch, but not in figuring out how to get back to Kansas. But it turns out that Glinda does.
Idina Menzel's role in 'Wicked' was Elphaba, also known as 'The Wicked Witch of the West' from the Wizard of Oz. She won numerous awards for her performance, including a Tony for 'Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical'.
In the book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum and the 1939 film, the Wicked Witch of the West had no name.In the Gregory Maguire book "Wicked, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," the Wicked Witch of the West was named Elphaba (a clever manipulation of L. Frank Baum). In the Broadway musical "Wicked," the Wicked Witch of the West is also named Elphaba. The Wicked Witch of the East had a small role in the L. Fank Baum book and the 1939 film. Her call to fame was her death, in both the book and movie. In the book by Maguire and in the Broadway musical, the Wicked Witch of the East's name was Nessarose. In the script for the MGM film, the Witch was originally called Gulcheria (after Miss Gulch).
Answer #1 If you mean the Broadway musical, it is about how Glinda and the Wicked Witch were friends back in school. It has very good songs. Answer #2 The book 'Wicked' and the play of the same name serve as a prequel to 'The Wizard of Oz'. For there's very little that we know about the Witch from either the original 1900 book edition or the beloved 1939 film version. For example, we know that she is the hated ruler of the Yellow Winkie Country of the West. We know that she wants the Slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East. And we know that the Wizard of Oz wants both witches dead. So the book and the play give ElphabaThropp, who is the Wicked Witch of the West, a chance to tell her side of the story. As a result, readers of the book and viewers of the play learn about the circumstances of her birth, education, family life, love interests, and passionate causes. There are differences between the book and the stage versions. The book is less sympathetic to Elphaba as sister to Nessarose, the Wicked Witch of the East and her father's favorite; and as the green-skinned outsider to 'decent' society. The play is more appealing, with its more sympathetic presentation and with its most appealing music score.
The exact salary depends upon a number of factors. One is the experience and reputation of the singer/actress. Another is the location in which the play is being performed. Both factors may result in different salaries, in different places, for playing the taxing role of Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West and the main character in the play 'Wicked'.

Edith Holm ka Gale Sondergaard [February 15, 1899-August 14, 1985] was the actress who originally was scheduled to play the Wicked Witch of the West in the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. The role originally was intended to be glamorous. But those who were involved in the making of the film ultimately decided to be faithful to the characterization by Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919]. As author and originator of the Oz series, Baum had represented the Witch most unglamorously in the text, and had had that unglamorous representation carried over into the accompanying illustrations. Once Sondergaard learned of the disfiguring make-up that would be required for the role, she refused to play the part.
