It's a gaff-rigged cutter. A very pretty one. I'm unable to identify the designer/maker.
Close: it is a gaff-rigger, but it's not a cutter.
It's called a Friendship Sloop. The boatbuilder is Jarvis Newman of Southwest Harbor, Maine, and that particular design is called a Pemaquid. Newman also made a larger one called the Dictator. It's 31' at the waterline, not including the bowsprit or the boom; Pemaquids, like the one Truman uses to escape his little world are only 25', not including the bowsprit or the boom. For more information, go to the Friendship Sloop Society's homepage at www.fss.org. There is even one identical to Truman's that is for sale up in Maine called the Duffer. It used to belong to my father. Not bad at $45,000!
The sail boat was made by John Alden.
The Production Budget for Message in a Bottle was $30,000,000.
