Well. Canada is HUGE. That's like saying which US state is similar in size to the entire USA. Alaska is the largest US state, so that is probably the closest answer.
New York State is immediately south of Montreal, Canada.
No state is on top of Canada, and no state is north of Canada, as Canada stretches further north than any other country in the world. Perhaps you are thinking of Alaska, which is the most northerly US state and lies to the north-west of much of Canada.

Alaska is a US state that is separated from the main body of the USA by Canada- there is no American State North of it, the only thing to it's North is the North Pole, which is international territory. The only other US state not to be directly linked to the main body of the country is Hawaii.
