April 1, 1999, was the date Nunavut was created. Northwest Territories was created on July 15, 1870, when Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory were transferred from Britain to Canada.
July 1, 1867 - Original Provinces: Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia.
July 15, 1870 - Rupert's Land and North West Territories; Manitoba was created out of Northwest Territories on the same day.
July 20, 1871 - British Columbia.
July 1, 1873 - Prince Edward Island.
June 13, 1898 - Yukon was created out of Northwest Territories.
September 1, 1905 - Saskatchewan and Alberta were created out of Northwest Territories.

1905. The first wave of immigrants after Canada purchased Alberta from the Hudson Bay Company was even more Canadians, mostly from Ontario and they did not like the idea of being a colony of Canada. They wanted more representation in the Canadian political system and more control over their affairs.
...All of them. Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut are all in northern Canada. In a way, it's what makes them territories, as the difference between a territory and a province has mainly to do with population (and not a lot of people are eager to live in the far north).
