There is evidence that in the 1200s in the Dolores and Kayenta Anasazi areas there was violence and warfare. It is thought that perhaps it was with Athabaskan or Numic speaking peoples that they were fighting with. They were moving into the area at that time. There are also signs of religious and cultural upheaval at that time so it could have been internal conflict as well. The Katchina religion and different living patterns happened soon after this period. The Navajo have cultural traditions of something despotic happening in some of the Pueblos at that time period. There could be some truth to it or it could be post facto explanations.

Earlier than this, there is no evidence that they fought. But there structure of some of the dwellings in some places suggest a need for defense.
