In the original 1900 book edition of The Wizard of Oz, the Cowardly Lion took nothing with him. For the Winged Monkeys captured him and flew him to an enclosure outside the Yellow Castle of the Wicked Witch of the West. In the beloved 1939 film version, the Winged Monkeys captured Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto. Dorothy's three friends - the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman - were left behind. But Toto escaped from the Witch's Castle and led the three friends to Dorothy's rescue. Outside the Castle, the three friends got into a fight with the Witch's Winkie guards. And so the three got into the Castle by wearing the helmet and armor of the Guards.
