When boys reached a certain age in the late 1800's, they transitioned from wearing dresses to wearing trousers. This is called "Breeching." The first kind of suits that the boys will wear are called Skeleton Suits.. They were tight to the body, worn with a white blouse, and the pants were attached to the jacket with buttons. The fabrics of their clothes were mainly cotton, wool, and some silk.
Clothing styles in the 1800's changed about as often then as now, which means every season. Women did wear long dresses throughout the 1800's, but the dresses looked quite different from period to period.
The dresses were long and had lots of frills and they were uncomfortable. Also, women wore bonnets and white gloves. That was their way of fashion. The men wore suits and hats and the women wore long dresses. The clothing covered the body from the neck to the ankles and they had long sleeves.
The people in Mali wear big, floaty clothes that are often multicoloured and very bright. They also wear head scarves and lots of accessories like bangles and bracelets and toe rings. Their clothing is very unique and inventive. I think they wear what really reflects their personality and what they feel is comfortable and practical.
Wear what you like, something what you feel safe in. It depends on the wheater of course but you can wear in Amsterdam what you would wear in the US or in the UK for example. The Netherlands is a very modern country and Amsterdam is modern too so you don't have to wear something specific.
