The French government is currently (2014) dominated by the Socialist party, which won the absolute majority in Parliament. The French president François Hollande is branded as a social-democrat and as someone favouring compromise over conflicts.

His left-wing goverment includes ministers from the Ecologist party, but no member of the Communist party.

Regarding economy, the Socialist party sticks to a free market policy, but there is a broad consensus about regulation. Unregulated markets (the so-called "laissez-faire" policy) are viewed as negative. This is barely questioned and most right-wing parties share that position, tending to protect the French economy from market excesses.

The political system is quite bipolar in France and people often have a black and white choice, left or right. Hence the Socialist party took a stance favouring same-sex marriage, (considered a badge of leftism) while the right-wing parties pitted themselves against the reform. This is in line with French politics where you try to differentiate yourselves from the other side. Generally speaking, the Socialist are accused of being too soft on crimimals and illegal Immigration, to favour a bloated public service and excessive taxes. In turn, they deem their opponents to be unfair to the poor or vulnerable people, to work for the exclusive profit of companies and favour the richest.
