The Mi'kmaq peoples were not agrarian. Climate on the upper east coast was too unreliable for farming. The Mi'kmaq were hunter-gatherers. Skilled at hunting moose and small game, fishing for eel and sea mammals they moved with the seasons. This is called "semi-nomadic" in that they routinely moved between summer fishing villages near the coast to the winter camps inland. The single-family winter hunting camps were scattered, but during the spring and summer, Mi'kmaq families joined other families to form a sort of village. Families would travel the same areas for a few years, until their natural knowledge of the land told them that resources were becoming less abundant. At which point they would seek another area, to allow the land they had been using to recover. By spreading out the impact in this way, no one area became seriously depleted of resources. Following the seasons they would fish eel and collect maple sap in the spring, hunt the sea waters during summer, gather blueberries and apples in the fall and hunt large and small game during the winter.
