Well, students are here to learn, so the first rule would be to work and respect the work of others. Students have to follow the guidance of their teachers and carers, another rule from that is respecting discipline. This is an obligation to come to school until at least 16, that is a rule of attendance. Schooling is free but mandatory.
The school itself follows some principles: equality (a rich student hasn't more right than a poor one) - neutrality (political, religious, etc..).
First, the École Maternelle. This is a Kindergarten or Nursery School, which children can attend (and most do attend) from age 2 to 6. Then the École Primaire until age 11, followed by the Collège until 16. From there they go to a Lycée (either Général, Technologique or Professionel) to prepare for entry to a University or a trade.
Most French children go to kindergaten by age three and all go to primary school by age 6. Education is mandatory and free until the age of 16. It is largely free afterwards, even in universities. Homeschooling is regulated and nearly non-existent. Parents are free to enroll their kids in private schools, but these schools have to comply with the national curriculum. Private schools cannot turn a student out based on his religion (Catholics schools have to accept Muslim students if they want to apply)
