Boq is described as an important, wealthy Munchkin in the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz'. The Munchkins all are dressed in blue. Their houses and their furnishings likewise are all blue.

Boq has a family and a big house. He invites Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto to spend the night. It's the first day that Dorothy is in the land of Oz. Her farmhouse is settled into place, on top of the dead Wicked Witch of the East. But she wants to get back to Kansas, the only way to which seems to be by the Wizard of Oz. Boq welcomes her to stay with him, instead of spending the night alone in her house or starting off on her journey.

He's an excellent host. He gives Dorothy helpful information, such as about dressing styles. Dorothy wears a blue and white checked dress with the slippers from the Wicked Witch of the East. Boq tells Dorothy that white is the color of powerful witches, on the order of sorceresses such as Glinda the Good Witch.
