What is a proximate cause or factor?
Every behavior is due to some kind of external stimulus that triggers the behavior. This behavior emerges due to the fact that it has proven to increase fitness. The evolutionary cause behind the behavior, however, is called the ultimate cause. The proximate cause is what is immediately observed as causing the behavior. First of all, it was totally different from the kind of behaviour that the Venetians had come to expect from Othello. Secondly, it was shocking and outrageous that any man should strike his wife. But it was even more shocking that he should do it in public. And it was even more shocking than that when, as it happened, the wife in question was the daughter of an important man, a senator. Lodovico says that if he told the people in Venice what he saw, they would not believe it.
