The Allies assigned codenames to the various operations involved in the invasion. Overlord was the name assigned to the establishment of a large-scale lodgement on the Continent. The first phase, the establishment of a secure foothold, was codenamed Neptune. According to the D-day museum : "The armed forces use codenames to refer to the planning and execution of specific military operations. Operation Overlord was the codename for the Allied invasion of northwest Europe. The assault phase of Operation Overlord was known as Operation Neptune. (...) Operation Neptune began on D-Day (6 June 1944) and ended on 30 June 1944. By this time, the Allies had established a firm foothold in Normandy. Operation Overlord also began on D-Day, and continued until Allied forces crossed the River Seine on 19 August 1944." 11-20 July 1944.

No one "wins" operations. Operation Overlord was an Allied offensive, only they knew about it and so only they called it Ovelord. An operation fails or it succeeds. Battles or campaigns are won, not operations. But in terms of the Invasion of Normandy, I think it's fairly obvious that the Allies won. If the invasion had not been successful, we wouldn't have had a war in the Western theater, and all of Europe would have been plunged into communist rule; we wouldn't have had 10,000 movies about D-Day itself and then later about Americans fighting in Europe (Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, The Longest Day, etc); we wouldn't remember June 6th as the anniversary of D-Day; civilians probably wouldn't even be familiar with the term D-Day; and there probably wouldn't be a huge American cemetery in Normandy commemorating the sacrifices of the men who died in the invasion.

The goal of Operation Overlord was to land on the Beaches of Normandy, land parachutes with men behind the beaches to do specific tasks to get ready for the forces landing in Normandy, bring in supplies and weapons with ammunition, defeat the Nazis in the Normandy region and to establish a "harbor" for the ships to unload.
