First of all, you had to survive. Around 50% of all children in the 19th century died of all kinds of diseases before age 14, a majority of that number even before age 5. If you survived, your life depended on your parents' wealth and social status. The large majority of poor urban children were put to work from around age 7 to 10. Children of farmers were put to work from an often even younger age, although work conditions might be less harsh for them. Only middle and upper class children had a life comparable with modern children, of course without the benefit of TV, smart phones and the internet.
