People Were Just Recovering From War So They Were Happy That War Was Over. There Was No internet. Most Houses Didnt Have Bathrooms And There Would Be One Bed In The House For The One Family To Sleep In.

Although we were technologically some way behind US in consumer products which we find indispensible today, many homes had fridges,radios, toasters, cookers etc. TV was available in black-and-white, but only two channels - neither of which broadcast more than six hours a day.

However, in 1959 two British phenomena hit the scene which are still going strong - Cliff Richard scored his first number 1 single "Livin' Doll" and is still recording today, aged nearly 70, and Sir Alec Issigonis revolutionised motoring with the Mini. Although now made by BMW, the car changed the way that Britain got about because it brought motoring to the people that could only have afforded a motorcycle before. Within five years, the car had become a fashion icon that even the rich and famous wanted, and was starting to win motorsport events. It caused other companies to rush out competing designs (with varying levels of success) and the spacesaving layout of a transverse engine powering the front wheels is almost universal in small cars.
