Although now made by BMW, the car changed the way that Britain got about because it brought motoring to the people that could only have afforded a motorcycle before. Within five years, the car had become a fashion icon that even the rich and famous wanted, and was starting to win motorsport events. It caused other companies to rush out competing designs (with varying levels of success) and the spacesaving layout of a transverse engine powering the front wheels is almost universal in small cars.
