The show had a 1973 Pilot called Shoppers Bazaar that might be called Merv Griffin's first attempt at inventing Wheel of Fortune as it was very different from the 1974 pilot. After NBC cancelled his show Jeopardy Merv Griffin produced the Wheel of Fortune show with Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford. Premiering on January 6 1975 the daytime show continued after Merv Griffin syndicated the Nighttime Wheel of Fortune show until on September 20 1991 the Daytime show was cancelled. The syndicated Nighttime version of Wheel of Fortune first aired on September 19 1983 and has just finished the 27 season.

Wheel of Fortune was always the name of the Show. Triviahas the first test pilot program with the name Shopper's Bizarre. This was many years ago in the earlyseventies and a time when TV show pilots were not aired and instead shown to test audiences. The actual show was never released in a format close to the first test pilot except for Chuck Woolery being the host. Unlike the actual first show, the first pilot had a vertically-mounted wheel.Edd Byrnes hosted the second and third pilots, both titled Wheel of Fortune. All three contained game elements which were either retooled or dropped by the time production began in December 1974 for the daytime version of Wheel of Fortune. It would not be until September 19 1983 that the current syndicatednighttime Wheel of Fortune would premiere with Pat Sajak and Vanna White as Host and Hostess. They also continued to do the daytime show for the network program where they were already hosts.
The first Wheel of Fortune puzzle was on a pilot called Shoppers Bazaar now owned by GSN. None of the puzzles from the show are available and the related link describes the pilot that is nothing like the current Wheel of Fortune.
