The Star Wars program (not the movies) was a program initiated by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s to create a network of satellites in space to shoot down nuclear weapons with lasers, if nuclear missiles were launched at the United States. Please note: This project has not been completed, however, work is still being done to complete it.

  • purported purpose: defend the US from nuclear attacks by ICBM via a variety of new technologies.
  • actual purpose: direct large amounts of taxpayer funding into work on various of Edward Teller's favorite but unproven ideas. Many of these ideas were high risk gambles that could never really be tested except in a real war. But they would keep the weapons labs active and well funded, even if they failed in actual use.
