First the Mayans, Aztecs, and other indigenous people owned it. They were conquered by Spain. Then they declared themselves an independent Mexico in 1810, won it from Spain by 1821. Texas succeeded and declared it's independence in 1836.
Santa Anna came through and annihilated the Alamo, not taking any prisoners. Sam Houston had ordered General Fannin to assist General Travis at the Alamo, however he never made it. They split up, with a group going to Goliad. They surrendered to a Mexican General when they ran out of supplies. The Mexicans massacred them, after they surrendered.
Sam Houston kicked some butt at the Battle of San Jacinto, capturing Santa Anna. They sent him back to Mexico. Then the United States annexed Texas all the way down to the Rio Grande. Mexico had never officially recognized Texas, they had planned on reconquering it. So when the U.S. basically just said, this is our land now, Mexico declared war on the U.S. The U.S. won.
