Possibly ( Pal) all lassie dogs used in the movies and tv shows were of the Collie breed. Thus different dogs could be used interchangably for different types of stunts a defensive fighitng stunf would require a different training tactic- and dog, than some humanitarian kid-stuck-in-well angle of plot. they all went downhill- i cannot recall any comedy or even light-hearted ( Dog came in handy!) treatments of any crises on Lassie and the program was Crisis-ridden. Chemically pure of any humor or light moments.

As far as is known , all of the Dogs used in the films and Television programs were by trainers, (Programmed) to respond to the name (lassie) for stunts, etc. Different dogs were used for different types of stunts, those involving fights or simulated (Holding off, a wildcat or larger animal) than dogs needed for more sedate or compassionate roles, different dogs (of the same breed) were trained for different roles- all being int he same size range, all being of the Colllie breed. In real life both male and female collies were used as prop or stunt (Lassies). as a general rule this(Interchangeable parts) doctrine made it convenient to have all dogs in heroic roled be standardized breeds such as the Collie (lassie) or German Shepherd (Rin-tin tin , Strong heart), etc. It is a bit of deception but this was fiction. again as a rule animal stuff doesn"t age a situation that Mr. Disney was well aware of as being common to both animals and cartoon characters. By the way (Lassie) was at no time or place a Disney production.
