Basically, all colonists who bought a paper product would have to buy a stamp, which is like a tax.
It was issued to help pay off the huge debt Britain owed from the French & Indian War. (Seven Years War)
Of course, everyone hated it, especially printers.
So, they formed groups called Sons of Liberty in Boston (And other places) and rebelled, plus lots of rioting broke out.
