The French Revolution started in 1789 on July 14 and ended in September of 1792 when the revolutionist overthrew the aristocrats. The war started with the Storming of the Bastille. On May 5, 1789 the Estates-General of 1789 decided to take care of this problem, but were unable to because only 2% of the current population's nobility cared. On June 17 of that same year, representatives were drawn from the middle class to create the National Assembly, which changed its name to the National Constituent Assembly on July 9.
After the Storming of the Bastille, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was yet another event in this revolution of France. After this 3rd stage, the first real revolt of the nobility began. The nobles would no longer help King Louis XVI by paying the taxes.
The National Guard had been formed by the middle class. Their uniform had the colors red, white, and blue on them, which was a mix of the cockade of the Paris commune and the king's white cockade. This soon became the symbol of the French revolution and later on known as France itself.
