A Teutonic tribe, the Goths. They had great power in the Roman world and from the 3rd-6th century AD. They traveled from Sweden, across the Baltic Sea and settled in the Vistula River Basin. They were the first Germanic people to become Christians.

They conquered Athens in 268 and invaded Asia Minor. The Goths were at the height of their reign in the 4th century whilst under the rule of Ermanaric, when their kingdom reached from the Black to the Baltic Sea.

Around 370, the Goths divided into two groups: the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. The Visigoths inhabited the area between the Dneister and Danube rivers. The Ostrogoths ruled east of the Dneister River, which is modern-day Belarus and Ukraine.

They would later be the cause of the Fall of the Roman Empire.

Who were the first people to speak German?

German as a language was first noted by the Romans in the 1st century b.c. The early Germanic tribes were in northern Europe which included mostly southern Scandinavia at the time, and many spread south which ultimately lead to an increase geographically in the German language. This dispersion also led to the formation of many other dialects and eventually languages as well. The Germanic tribes in these regions spoke Germanic, with Indo-European roots, and the variations. One of the oldest known languages from German was Gothic where a Bible translation was found in the 4th century. There were many Germanic tribes who spoke variations of Germanic including the Allemanni, Angles, Teutonic, and the Chauci.
