They weren't good. Louis XIV and Louis XV had made such a scandalous state debt, that in 1788 the country was declared bankrupt. Louis XIV had build the Versailles palace which had cost a fortune and both Louis XIV and Louis XV had involved France in the 7-year war in the USA which they shouldn't have done, because this was the final blow to the treasury. Then Louis XVI came to power on the death of his grandfather Louis XV and all of France expected him to make everything better. Though, as Louis XVI tried to do so by asking more tax money and making the clergy and nobility pay up as well, he was objected so unrespectfully against, that he dropped the plans despite the advice of his finance minister.
