Many passengers felt that there was nothing wrong. Stewards went up and down the first class corridors telling passengers that they should head up on deck, but not to worry. Some first class passengers even went into the dining room and ordered drinks. It wasn't until the decks began to tilt that passengers became worried.

  • The passengers on the Titanic did not at first realize the damage to the ship from the ice berg and not too concerned because the media had been arrogant enough to consider the Titanic would never sink. The tear along the side of the ship from the ice berg was more serious than thought and icy water poured into each panel of the ship below the waterline causing it to sink very quickly (an hour.) The captain of the ship put out an SOS (the 'help' call had just been changed and was not familiar to other ships at the time) and flares were sent up, but were thought to be a celebration instead of flares asking for help. The Irish immigrants below decks in third class had gates to keep them down below so they would not disturb the first class passengers. Once passengers realized that the ship was going to sink there was mayhem for passengers to get into the lifeboats. Women and children first. The builders of the Titanic were so arrogant that they did not have enough life boats because they never thought the Titanic would sink and those life boats that were filled with women and children were less than half full. As the life boats were lowered into the water there was sheer fear as the third class passengers were unable to get through the iron gates to safety (proven by photos recently of the Titanic when it was found) and many of the First Class Passengers were also stuck. Hallways were filled up quickly; doors burst off their hinges from the water pressure and room after room to the grand stairwell were soon under water and many drowned before they could be saved. It was sheer terror and especially the men that were to stay on the Titanic to give the women and children room for the life boats knew they would be going to a watery grave. Some men jumped as did women and children and a very few men and women made it to any life boat. Those that jumped were either killed by the fall or died quickly from hypothermia.
