Best Answer

The Andes Mountains formed because two tectonic plates (a tectonic plate is a piece of the Earth's crust), the Nazca Plate and the Antarctic Plate, pushed into the western edge of South America. This compressed the western edge of the South American plate, and folded it, creating the Andes Mountains.

A few of the mountains were formed by volcanic activity. which is also the result of the collision between this plates.
