Potlucks were made illegal in Canada in 1884, and the United States in the late nineteenth century. This was due to the urging of Christian missionaries and government agents who considered them wasteful and unproductive. Of course, potlucks continued to be popular in both countries, they just became a little more secretive. Potluck bans were dropped from the books in 1934 in the U.S., and in 1951 in Canada.
