Specifically, author and Oz series originator L. Frank Baum was living in the Humboldt Park section of Chicago. He was trying to establish himself as a writer after a failed attempt at a newspaper business in North Dakota. He wrote "Mother Goose in Prose" and "Father Goose, His Book." With their successes, he realized that he could make a living off of writing for children and that he could quit his physically demanding salesman job.
