The current flag was designed and adopted for restricted use in 1869 and became the national flag in 1902. It is the British Blue Ensign, incorporating a stylised representation of the Southern Cross showing the four brightest stars in the constellation. Each star varies slightly in size.
add. Currently in the country, there is a growing movement seeking to change the flag to a more distinctive one. Perhaps along the lines of the easily-recognizable Canadian one. Candidates suggested include the Koru, Kiwi, Silver fern, and the current Maori Flag.
Quite simply, it didn't. It achieved Dominion status in 1907 and gradually gained more powers (sometimes reluctantly) over the 20th century as various Acts were passed in the British (not English) Parliament.

The two most obvious examples are that English is spoken in New Zealand and that England's monarchs appear on pieces of New Zealand's currency. From my visit to New Zealand a few years ago I also noticed that there were many companies and brands in New Zealand that came from Great Britain.
