31 January 1976 30 June 1977 (After Mr. K.Karunidhi's Government which ruled the state from 10 February 1969 to 31 January 1976 , was dismissed .This was due to the infamous emergency declared by the Indira Gandhi Regime. Lakhs of political activists, including D.M.K.Leaders were arrested under provisions of MISA. 17 February 1980 9 June 1980

(This was after Dismissing the Government headed by Sri. M.G.Ramachandran,who ruled the State from 30th June to February 1980.This was done to ensure that the Congress -DMK combine will win the Assembly elections)

But after the lifting of Presidents rule, in both the above cases, Mr.M.G.R, swept the polls to form the Government.
