They don't. Ali did die. Ian killed her. But the girls do have susipicions that Ali is A, when she's not. She's dead.
They find out later on. The episode hasn't been aired yet. But, there are two Delourentis' girls. Courtney and Alison. There are identical twins. Courtney has a mental problem and was staying at Radley Institute. The girls' parents decided to switch Courtney to a new institute. Courtney was always pretending to be Ali, so one day, the 4 girls showed up in Ali and Courtney's back yard raving about some flag. So while the real Ali was up in her room, Courtney stole Ali's A ring, pretended to be Ali and befriended the girls. That same day, the mother Jessica, brought Ali to the institute as Courtney. When Ali tried telling her mom she wasn't Courtney, her mom thought she was lying. When the girls all have the sleepover in Spencer's barn, that's when the real Ali comes back. She killed the Ali they knew, which was really Courtney. Then the real Alison who was never friends with the 4 girls, becomes A. She learns all their secrets from Courtney's diary. The real Alison is alive and she killed Ian and Courtney.
