The earth gets the same amount of direct sunlight at all times, with the very minor exception that the sunlight is slightly less intense when the Earth is at its perihelion, the point in its orbit when it is farthest from the sun, which happens in early July, and slightly more intense when the Earth is at its aphelion, the point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun, which happens in early January. What does change through the year, causing significant seasonal changes, is what latitude gets the sun's direct rays due to the tilt of its rotational axis with respect to the plane of its orbit.
