Meteors, or "shooting stars", can be seen anynight. However, there are a half-dozen or so known "meteor showers", in which the Earth passes through the path of an old comet. In a strong meteor shower, you might see several meteors EACH MINUTE as opposed to a few each evening.

The next is the Lyrid meteor shower, which should peak in the pre-dawn hours of next Wednesday, April 22. In addition to the meteors, something else fascinating will happen; the planet Venus will disappear behind the Moon!

A meteor can come at any time. It is normally just a small piece of dirt or dust that gets into our atmosphere and burns up. At certain times of the year we see more of them, because we are passing through dirtier parts of space. This normally happens when we pass through the dust trail of a comet, which happens several times a year, always at the same time of year. At those times we have a better chance of seeing meteors, but on any night of the year there is always a chance of seeing one if you are lucky.

Millions of meteors (Shooting stars) "hit" the Earths atmosphere every day.

If you look up into a clear night sky for any length of time, you will undoubtedly spot a meteor.

Now - oh bugger you missed it. hang about ........ oooh there was another.

Damn, you missed it again!

Just go outside (it's that place where the door is to the outside world) and look up at the sky and within about half an hour you should see a meteor (Shooting star). There is no prediction, they just happen - but very frequently.

Shooting stars appear everyday and often, their appearances are random unless the path of the Earth crosses that of a meteor's.

A shooting star is a broken piece of a meteor has entered Earth's atmosphere. It is the visible path of the meteorite (the broken part of the meteor) that is actually the meteorite burning up due to the heat caused by the friction upon entering the atmosphere.

Many meteoroids are formed by impacts between asteroids or left in trails behind meteors.

When the path of a meteor crosses the path of the earth, the many meteorites that are following the meteor will enter the Earth's atmosphere. When this happens, up to a hundred shooting stars can appear in the span of an hours. Because, we know the orbits of the meteors, we can predict when we will see the most shooting stars.

Meteor shooting stars appear all the time, several every hour. These are the small pieces of rock that enter the earths atmosphere and burn up very quickly and brightly.

The next Comet, which is sometimes referred to as a shooting star, is difficult to predict, as there are loads in long stretched out orbits around our sun, but most of the time they cant be seen.

There are a few up there now that can be seen with binoculars, but the next bright one is a little difficult to predict.

There are different meteor showers throughout the year. The next one, though certainly not the best of them, is the Lyrids, due for late April, so due to begin within the next few days(today being the 13th of April 2009), peaking around the 22nd or 23rd of April. With any meteor shower, you cannot expect to see a huge amount of meteors all at once and for a long time. Even the best meteor showers mean you might only see one every few minutes, and only if you are lucky enough to be looking in the right direction when it happens. The Perseids in August and the Leonids in November are amongst the best of the year.
In the sky, just like every one before it. You can find online resources that tell you when from such webs sites as the American Meteor Society, the link is shown below -

Showers happen quite frequently but are difficult to determine because some showers will only have 10 per hour while others could have upwards of +100 per hr.

Some better known ones are:

Quandrantids with maximum on Jan 4

Perseids with maximum on Aug 12

Orinoids with maximum on Oct 21

Geminids with maximum on Dec. 14

The exact days each year will change because the calendar changes.
