You have to be 5 years old when you start kindergarten but some happen

to start when they are 4 if there birthday is in the beginning of September

if you just turned 5 years old after the beginning of September you have to wait a whole year to start kindergarten

In the US, a child is generally five when they start kindergarten. But it can depend on their birthday and the cutoff date in whatever state they are in. Most states require you to be 5 within a couple weeks of school starting. So the youngest children may not quite be 5 yet. Some states have later cutoff dates; it actually can be as late as December. So in that case, there are a lot more four year olds starting. And then some states ensure that NO child is still 4 by making the cutoff before school even starts, so in that case, everyone is at least 5 and the oldest children will already be six on the first day of school.
