King David suffered major setbacks in which he sometimes came close to being killed (such as in 1 Samuel ch.24), but none of these were conclusive. Had any of them been a full defeat, David would not have died peacefully on his bed, as he did (1 Kings ch.2). The closest thing to a full defeat was during Absalom's rebellion (2 Samuel ch.15-18).
