Dr. Ballard and his team used special diving equipment to explore the North Sea for the Titanic. It was so deep that normal diving equipment couldn't be used so they had to make special diving bells to go that deep.
submarines and years of searching
The remains of the Titanic were discovered in 1985 thanks to a joint US-French expedition. The U.S. Navy research ship Knorr met with a French vessel - the Suroit.

A photographic sled called Argo was used to search the ocean floor. It carried strobe lights, sonar, and video cameras and the Titanic remains were discovered on September 1st.
They searched the bottom of the ocean close to where they thought it went down, and then once they found the ship they took the first sonar picture of the sunken Titanic to ever be taken.

Dr. Robert Ballard and his team thought that they had figured out the location of the ship, but it was so deep that it took special equipment to get to. Once that they were able to design and make the diving bell with cameras and other items they were able to send it down and find the Titanic. Ballard and his team produced a film on the discovery and I am sure you can see this by getting a DVD at a store like Blockbuster.

The wreck of Titanic was discovered in 1985 and the credit goes to the US/French team led by Dr. Robert Ballard. While on the Knorr, he was operating the Argo and swept the area, not for the wreck but for the debris field which he knew would lead him to the wreck.
