In 1940, four teenagers discovered a series of prehistoric cave paintings in Lascaux, France, dating back approximately 17,000 years. The artwork features over 600 images, including animals like horses, deer, and bison, showcasing the artistic skills and cultural practices of early humans. This discovery provided significant insights into prehistoric life and sparked widespread interest in cave art, leading to further archaeological studies. Lascaux is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, although access to the original cave is restricted to preserve the artwork.
The cave was closed to the public in 1963 after it was noticed that the change of atmosphere in the air of the caves (dure to visitors' breath) had introduced some types of fungi into the cave, and that the paintings were attacked by the development of these fungi, putting them in danger. Listed among the world heritage sites, the Lascaux cave may get into the 'endangered' heritage sites. A replica of the original site was built nearby, and is a very astonishing place to visit.
In September 1940, a group of teenagers was wandering in the woods when the dog of one of them chased a rabbit into a small opening, into a larger hole left by an uprooted fallen tree. The dog's owner, Marcel Rabidat, thought it was the opening of an underground passage to a nearby castle and went back on the 12th of September, with three other teenagers. They enlarged the opening and slipped inside the cave with a lamp.
